New research suggests that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a leading health publication points out that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People using such treatments should be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to starting weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a intense resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," said an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts stress that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
