Trump's Progressive Warning Overlooks Europe's True Threat: Economic Decline.

The recent US security policy document presents a misguided view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" agendas represent an existential risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument rests on a serious misreading of the situation. The actual danger facing the EU is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Gap Between the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. During this period, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Today, about 50% of the global top fifty technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Question

This widening economic gap is driven by stronger productivity growth in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech dominance is decidedly American. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity raises a vital issue: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is the EU stand? Most analysts concede it is largely a two-horse race between the United States and China, with Europe entering at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of major reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic network for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, which limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under one regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population size, is split among 27 different national regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, there are causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to propose serious reform. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for major reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe retains considerable advantages: high-quality human capital, excellent education systems, and world-class labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating next-generation technologies, it can still significantly increase productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a critical moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
