Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Competitors will gain the option to contest certain calls made by the official, following the practice currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development comes just a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review specific decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
